Degani Vintage was born as a reaction to the North American secondhand textile industry; local “maquilas” or sweatshops producing cheap clothing for American markets; and the cumulative impact on local Maya weaving culture. We aim to shed light on the economical and cultural impact of producing and subsequent dumping of textiles in Guatemala.
Sustainability is part and parcel of how we function. All business decisions are made with environmental and social impact at the core. In our daily operations, the shop is kept as low waste as possible.
Our physical space was built as a reflection of our values. The showroom was built completely of local sustainable materials, with local design and craftsmanship and as a celebration of local heritage.
We have committed to learning about local weaving culture from the seed up. Literally. As part of our ongoing education, we are growing our own cotton on our urban rooftop farm, learning how to produce thread the Maya way, as well as the art of backstrap loom weaving and local natural dyes. It is important to understand what exactly is being lost to paca (secondhand) culture.

Degani vintage surgió como una reacción a la industria de textiles y ropa usada importados de Norte America, a las maquilas locales que producen mucha de esta ropa de un principio, y los efectos cumulativos de esto en la cultura milenaria textilera de las comunidades indígenas de Guatemala. Nuestro objetivo es poner en evidencia el impacto local de la producción y sobreconsumo de ropa en el mercado guatemalteco.
La sostenibilidad es la base de nuestro trabajo. Toda decisión de nuestra empresa es tomada consiente de su impacto medioambiental y social. Nuestras operaciones funcionan lo mas cercano a cero desperdicio posible.
Nuestro showroom fue construido acorde a nuestros valores. Diseñado totalmente de materiales locales y sostenibles y fabricado por artistas guatemaltecos en celebración de la cultura local.
Nos hemos comprometido a aprender todo sobre la cultura textilera Maya, desde la semilla para arriba. Literalmente. Desde cosechar algodón en nuestro huerto urbano (ubicado en el techo de un centro comercial), hilar con método Maya, tejer sobre telar de cintura e incluso tenido natural de fibras. Es importante entender a profundidad lo que estamos perdiendo a la cultura de “pacas” en Guatemala.
